Abstract

This paper investigates the idea of physiological trade-offs in nutritional stress by assessing how hyperglycemia caused by excess dietary sugar impacts on fitness in Drosophila melanogaster. The study connects metabolic imbalance with the alterations in the energy distribution among growth, maintenance, and reproduction using a theoretical and integrative approach. Impaired metabolic efficiency, enhanced lipid deposition, and enhanced oxidative stress are the result of high-sugary conditions, which disrupt cellular and physiological functions. The outcome of these metabolic disturbs is the impaired morphological growth and massive drops in reproductive activity, including decreased fecundity and viability. Moreover, the aging exacerbates these effects, hastening the general reduction in fitness. The results show that hyperglycemia causes a change in the energy distribution to survival at the cost of growth and reproduction, which shows evident life-history trade-offs. This paper gives a broad basis of interpreting the effects of nutritional stress on an organism in terms of its fitness.
