Abstract

This study examines the socio-economic conditions and empowerment of rural women in Sonipat district, Haryana, focusing on their role in rural development, employment patterns and access to resources. The study area, located in the northern part of India with a semi-arid climate and fertile plains, provides a significant context for understanding rural dynamics. The research highlights that rural women actively contribute to both agricultural and non-agricultural sectors, including farming, livestock management and small-scale enterprises, yet their work often remains undervalued and unrecognized.  The study further explores key challenges such as unequal pay, limited access to education and training, restricted mobility due to socio-cultural norms and inadequate access to land and financial resources. Demographic factors such as age, caste, family structure and education significantly influence women’s participation in economic and social activities. Data analysis reveals that a majority of households depend on employment-based income sources, indicating a growing shift toward wage-based livelihoods in rural areas.
