Surface Coatings for Enhancing Solar Photovoltaic Efficiency
Main Article Content
Abstract
The coatings of the solar photovoltaic (PV) systems are very essential in enhancing the efficiency and performance of the systems. These coatings are intended for optimisation of some feature of the PV efficiency, such as light trapping, energy conversion or protection against degradation. Through the use of certain coatings, the efficiency of the capture of light by PV surfaces can be enhanced and thus minimal reflection losses. Moreover, coatings can also act as a protective layer that prevents the PV modules from environmental conditions such as extreme weather, UV light and mechanical stress hence increasing the modules’ durability. Extra layers like the anti-reflective layers, self-cleaning layers, and hydrophobic layers are other benefits that reduce soiling, dust, and moisture interference, which otherwise hampers performance. The creation and use of these coatings are as a result of research that is continuously conducted with the aim of improving the total performance and durability of solar power systems. This involves research into new materials and technologies to develop the coatings that enhance energy generation and at the same time make solar PV system sustainable and affordable. As the interest in renewable energy sources intensifies, the application of surface coatings in the enhancement of solar photovoltaics is a viable way of achieving better and longer-lasting solar power solutions.
